Santana leads Mets over Cardinals 3-2

NEW YORK (AP) - Johan Santana bested Chris Carpenter in a matchup of Cy Young Award winners, and the New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Thursday to win their first series since early June.

Nick Evans hit a two-run double in a three-run fourth inning for the Mets, who gave up an unearned run in the first and then rallied before a crowd of 41,221, the largest in Citi Field history and the first sellout since opening day. New York had offered 50% discounts on some tickets.

The Mets took 3 of 4 from the NL Central leader heading into their weekend Subway Series with the Yankees, who are coming to Citi Field for the first time. The Cardinals, who were outhit 8-5, lost consecutive games for the first time since a 5-game skid from June 8-9.
