Poplar Bluff doctor suspected of health care fraud

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - A doctor in Poplar Bluff faces federal charges.

Poplar Bluff police tell Heartland News Devendra K. Varma of Haven Hill Medical Clinic was arrested on federal charges Wednesday.

They would not elaborate on what kind of charges, but a copy of the criminal complaint against Varma says he is suspected of health care fraud, including prescribing drugs to at least 15 patients who had prior drug charges.  The complaint also says police saw Varma's patients selling the drugs on Haven Hill Medical Clinic's parking lot after leaving the clinic.

Varma is also suspected of over-prescribing drugs to Medicare and Medicaid recipients and receiving reimbursement at a level higher than entitle to receive and that the Central Pharmacy received payments for "medically unnecessary prescriptions."

Varma's wife, Veena Varma, is the owner of the permit for Central Pharmacy which is located at the same address at Haven Hills Medical Clinic.

Police say Varma was taken to the federal courthouse in Cape Girardeau and later transported to St. Louis.
