Need to Bleed

Jonesboro (KAIT) -  Stop by the Paragould Walmart Supercenter this weekend and you could save more than just money, you could end up helping to save a life.

The American Red Cross Blood Mobile was at the supercenter in an effort to bring in donations for one-year-old Bryant Watson who received a heart transplant and is in desperate need for units of blood.  The goal amount they wish to reach for Watson is 100 units by Monday.

Crystal Hatcher, a representative for the American Red Cross, says that people need to be educated about the desperate need for donations.  She also informs that this time of year is the hardest hit for the Red Cross.

She says, " During the summer months it's harder to get people to donate blood.  Our usual donors are out on vacation.  It's hot.  People don't want to give blood when it's hot.  The usage is up and the donations are down."

That is why it is so important to donate now. She emphasizes that communities need to be made aware of the need, explaining that blood units only have  a 42 day shelf-life.

The blood mobile will be at Walmart until Monday.  The times for the drive will be Sunday from 12:30 to 5 pm and Monday from 3 to 7 pm.  They will also be accepting any type of monetary or material donations for the family.

For more information on giving blood and to find out if you are eligible, simply go to www.bloodisneeded.org
