Looking for love in the library

Jonesboro, AR (KAIT) -- "It may not be the first place you think of when you're trying to find your perfect match,  but Tuesday night, it wasn't just the books that brought people  to the Craighead County Jonesboro Public Library.

"This is just a natural meeting place for people of all ages....so come on down here and find a date," said Nechia Whittingham.

Whittingham helped organize the speed dating at the library.  It's a way for singles searching for other singles to meet and get to know each other.  They only have three minutes to meet, mingle, and move to the next single.

"It's another way to meet people and yeah, it's a good thing," said Deena Casady.

Deena Casady says she's tried online dating before, but she is a first time speed dater.  A single who says dating can be a bit daunting

"Oh, it's very hard.   It's harder now than it was when I was a teenager," said Casady.

She says she's not looking for love right now, but if she's bitten by the love bug......

"Well if I found it, then great," said Casady.

"The library is such a fun environment, and it's not just about books, and yes we are always going to have those wonderful books, but there is so much more to the library," said Whittingham.

Nechia Whittingham says it's for that very reason they decided to hold a speed dating session, and because she says looking for love at the library is certainly nothing new.

"We see a lot of lonely people--we do, we see a lot of lonely people.   Social networking sites on the computer, they're off and running all of the time.   We're just providing the people what they are wanting," said Whittingham.

The ladies are given numbers and cards, and the men are given letters.  Ladies can list on the cards which men they would like to share their contact information with--or choose to not share it at all.  They had about 20 people signed up for speed dating and library officials said the phones have been ringing off the hook.  Depending on the reaction, library officials say they are considering other speed dating nights.
