COPY-Police: Man confesses in Waldron ex-mayor's death

Associated Press - July 8, 2009 5:44 PM ET

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Police say a Fort Smith man accused in the death of a former Waldron mayor has confessed to the crime.

A police affidavit filed Wednesday says 21-year-old Mario Dawson admitted beating 75-year-old Troy Anderson to death. Dawson is in the Sebastian County jail, where he's being held on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Dawson also was arraigned Wednesday for fraudulent use of a credit card. He and his wife, 20-year-old Jasmine Dawson, are accused of using Anderson's bank cards.

Fort Smith Police Captain Jarrard Copeland says police believe that Mario Dawson knew Anderson, and that Anderson was killed after a confrontation between the two.

A badly burned body was discovered Tuesday in rural Pulaski County - the same area where Anderson's truck had been found.
