USPS says no "final" decision to permanently close post office

by Stan Morris email | twitter

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The decision to close the downtown United States Postal Service permanently is one that has not been made, according to USPS spokeswoman Leisa Tolliver-Gay.

This contradicts a report from another local media outlet that suggested the decision had been made to close the downtown location permanently.

In a statement released only to Region 8 News by the USPS:

The Postal Service has moved out of the Downtown Station in Jonesboro, AR because the air condition was not working properly, and we did not want our employees working in that building for long hours in the summer heat.  That's why we moved our retail employees to the Main Post Office on an emergency basis.  We are still serving our post office box customers from this facility because we are able to put up their mail early before the heat becomes unbearable.

We are now pursuing other options to provide service to downtown customers and will announce the details as soon as they are finalized.  No final decisions have been made at this time.

In a phone interview with Region 8 News, Tolliver-Gay said the Postal Service hopes to maintain a downtown presence for customers, but stressed that nothing was certain. "All I know is that we have no final decisions made at this time and that is a fact," said Tolliver-Gay.
