JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)- Jonesboro Police are investigating a weekend shooting stemming from an alleged burglary that left an Arkansas State University football player injured and behind bars.

According to a news release from JPD, 22-year-old Paul Stephens is suspected of burglarizing a home at 2200 Belt Street just after 12:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The home owner, 25-year-old Antonio Williams, shot the alleged burglar in the chest before police say he fled the scene.

When police arrived, they say the suspect had fled the scene.

In the news release, police say they conducted a preliminary investigation that led them to St. Bernard's Hospital, where Stephens was being treated for a wound the middle torso. Stephens was arrested.

Stephens is being held by Jonesboro Police as detectives continue the investigation.

AStateRedWolves.com lists Paul Stephens as a defensive back wearing number 6. According to his profile, "While Stephens recorded just 10 tackles last season, he is expected to figure heavily into ASU's 2009 defensive plan."
