ST. LOUIS (AP) - Joel Pineiro hit a two-run double and gave up one run in seven innings, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Pineiro entered the game with one RBI this season before lining the first pitch he saw from Arizona starter Yusmeiro Petit just inside third base to score Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina.
Manager Tony La Russa let Pineiro take the mound for the start of the eighth inning to give the crowd a chance to show its appreciation before pulling him.
Pineiro (8-9) struck out three and allowed five hits in getting third win in five decisions after losing five straight and 8 of 9. It also marked his first win since April that he didn't pitch a complete game.
