WEINER, AR (KAIT) - Two Region eight schools are considering joining forces. Tuesday night school officials from Weiner and Valley View met to discuss their possible future together.
"We want to do what's best for the children of Weiner, not only for next year but for years to come," said Weiner Superintendent Chuck Hanson.
Weiner School Superintendent Chuck Hanson said they know their time is up. They have been below the state required student body of 350 for two years now.
"We know in December or January of this coming year that we will receive notification that we have to consolidate or annex with another school district," said Hanson.
They think that other district could be Valley View. Superintendent Radius Baker said the schools do have a lot in common.
"The demographics of both school districts are pretty much the same. Weiner has good test scores," said Baker.
Out of seven possible districts around Weiner, Hanson said Valley View seems to be the best option. There are many possibilities for what could happen if this choice is made.
"With an administrative annexation would mean both schools would keep their identity. Weiner would be Valley View School Wiener Campus or something like that," said Baker.
"The best thing that could happen would be to have an administrative annexation and just leave both campuses open," said Hanson.
And even if that does happen, it doesn't mean it would be permanent.
"Any school district that annexes Weiner into their district then will have to look down the road to see exactly if it is affordable on that district to continue to have campuses at Weiner," said Baker.
"We all have to be realistic that if our numbers start dropping and we can't financially do it then we'll have to do something else," said Hanson.
But as of now, nothing is decided.
"Regardless of where they go our kids can get a good education," said Hanson.
More meetings between the Weiner School Board and the Valley View School Board will happen in August. There are also planned meetings to get public comments that will happen in both school districts in September.
