Another 60-day duck season likely, expert says

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Duck counts showing more waterfowl in the central United States and Canada than were present last year mean another 60-day duck season is likely for Arkansas, the state Game and Fish Commission was told Thursday.

Doyle Shook, wildlife chief for the agency, said habitat conditions for breeding waterfowl improved in much of the U.S. and Canada in 2009.

"The Canadian prairie ponds were up 17% from 2008 and 5% above the long-term average," Shook said. "Total duck abundance is estimated at 42 million, a 13% increase from 2008 and 25% above the long-term average."

Shook said the federal regulatory option for the Mississippi Flyway most likely will be the liberal package. "This will result in a 60-day season with a 6-bird daily bag limit," he said.
