LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The state's economic development director says it was no surprise to him that a San Antonio-area official complimented an east Arkansas site that hopes to attract a Toyota plant.
Jim Pickens says it is good to know that the town of Marion is being recognized for its road and rail infrastructure and its nearness to river and air transport. Marion and San Antonio are said to be the leading finalists as Toyota considers construction of a fifth manufacturing plant in the United States.
The company has not announced any expansion plans. A top local official in San Antonio said that the city needs to catch up with Marion if it wants to win the Toyota plant.
The city and state of Texas are working on a plan to make $20 million in rail improvements. Marion officials say that other areas may be able to equal, but not do better than, Marion when it comes to transportation.
