ST. LOUIS (AP) - A collection of defensive gems by shortstop Brendan Ryan prompted St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa to reference exploits by Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith.
Ryan was involved in four double plays in Monday night's 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. He also showed great range running down a couple of pop-ups.
La Russa was more impressed with the glove than with Ryan's four hits, which matched a career high, and two RBIs.
The 27-year-old Ryan laughed at comparisons to Smith, a first ballot Hall of Famer on defense alone who developed into a good hitter with the Cardinals. His single-word reaction: "Whoa."
