Shortstop signs with ASU

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - A standout shortstop from Edwardsville, Ill., Zach Maggio, has signed to play college baseball for the Red Wolves of Arkansas State, ASU coach Tommy Raffo says.

A news release from ASU said Maggio, a 5-10, 165-pound right-hander, was named first-team All-Southwest Conference following his senior season at Edwardsville High School. He also earned the Alton-Telegraph All-Area first-team shortstop honors, was named to the 2009 St. Louis Post-Dispatch honorable mention team and was selected to play in the MEDCA All-Star game.

A .397 career hitter, Maggio hit .453 his senior year with 17 doubles, two triples and two home runs. An honor roll student, he was a teammate of current ASU junior outfielder Todd Baumgartner at Edwardsville.
