School districts in Arkansas, ranked by their number of pupils. Governor Mike Huckabee, in his State of the State address today, proposed cutting the number of Arkansas school districts from 310 to about 116.
Many of the larger districts could remain intact, but they would have to meet higher education standards in the wake of a state Supreme Court decision. Smaller districts would likely have to merge their high schools into existing larger or into new regional districts.
There are 77 districts with more than 1,500 students. That's the potential cutoff figure Huckabee used in saying which districts might be preserved and which might be forced to merge.
