Free flu shots for kids

Little Rock, AR - For the first time, Arkansas school children in grades kindergarten through 12th grade will be offered free seasonal flu shots this school year.

According to the Arkansas Department of Health, starting mid-October children will be sent home with a permission form for parents to sign to get the free shot.

Parents must give permission in order for their child to receive the free shot.  ADH also said the seasonal flu shot will not protect against the H1N1 or Swine Flu virus.

Children 9 years and younger who've never had a flu shot before, will need a second flu shot for full protection.  The guidance we are providing today will give local schools officials the tools they need to make informed decisions about how to decrease exposure to the flu while limiting the disruption of day to day learning in schools.

A swine flu vaccine may be ready by october.  Officials are reminding everyone to wash hands frequently and stay home when you are sick.
