LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Legislators taking the lead on Governor Huckabee's government consolidation plan say combining departments will save money and improve efficiency.
Huckabee announced on Tuesday a sweeping plan to roll 50 agencies and boards into ten departments. Senator Bob Johnson of Morrilton and Representative Marvin Childers of Blytheville, filed legislation yesterday to bring about the merger.
The plan would also create a new state Department of Agriculture. Johnson says restructuring is a common-sense move because it will centralize much of what state government does.
