ASU holds final split-squad practice

JONESBORO (8/10/09) - Lightning in the Jonesboro area forced the Arkansas State football team inside shortly after it began its fourth practice of fall camp Monday evening, but close to four hours after beginning the workout the Red Wolves were able to get back on the field for an abbreviated finish.

ASU, holding its final split-squad practice, originally took the field at 4:30 p.m. with the first group of players and was able to make it through the early periods before the bad weather hit.  The Red Wolves were able to take the ASU Stadium field for the second practice session, which was shortened due to the lengthy delay, at approximately 8:30 p.m.

"The weather definitely put a wrinkle into what we had planned," said ASU Head Football Coach Steve Roberts.  "I thought it was great for us in some regards, just the sense of the unknown and the chaos created by not knowing what the schedule is and having to change practice.  We just challenged the players to come out and react to that situation with a positive mind and control their focus and their effort.  I thought overall we did a really good job of that."

After going through a number of individual and position drills, ASU concluded the second session with a 21-play team period.

"We had a lot of the new stuff in today(Monday)," said Roberts.  "We had a lot of things that were new that we didn't have an opportunity to rep in inside drill or skele and that type stuff.  We did it in a team setting and I thought they executed some of it very well for the first time.  I thought our effort and attention was good.  There were several things to be proud of tonight(Monday)."

ASU will suit out in full pads for the first time at Tuesday's practice, which will feature a scrimmage expected to run 65-70 plays.

"We'll have a short practice ahead of the scrimmage," said Roberts.  "Everything in the scrimmage will be scripted from a situation and personnel standpoint with who we want in running certain plays.  It will give everyone a good opportunity, from the newcomers all the way through the veterans."

Todays's practice is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., but the start time could change depending on weather forecasts.
