ASU fall camp practice

JONESBORO (8/13/09) - The Arkansas State football team was back on the practice fields in shorts and shoulder pads Thursday evening for its eighth workout, which marked the end of its first week of fall camp practices.

"Today (Thursday) wasn't bad.  We started off a little slow but finished with a little bit better tempo and a little bit better enthusiasm," said ASU head coach Steve Roberts. "I thought our execution was a little bit better at the end than it was is in the beginning and we got some things done."

Roberts said he was pleased with certain areas of the practice, noting the work the Red Wolves got done on special teams and during the team-practice periods.

"We saw some team pass and team blitz situations, and we did some full-speed punt and punt returns and I thought that went well," added Roberts.  "This was the first time we have been able to get that on film, so it will be invaluable when we go back and show the guys what is expected in those two areas."

Roberts also announced that freshman quarterback Phillip Butterfield will miss the 2009 season after suffering a knee injury in practice earlier this week.

"Phillip is out for the season," said Roberts.  "It will give him an opportunity to learn.  We were hoping to give him the opportunity to learn by getting a few reps in practice.  He was doing well and we are very proud to have him as a part of our program.  He is a great young man and he has the skills that I think it takes for him to be successful here.  We are looking forward to next year and getting him back out here."

Part of ASU's 2009 signing class, Butterfield was a two-time all-state selection while at Lake Hamilton High School.  The Arkansas Associated Press Super Team selection was the36th ranked quarterback in the nation by ESPN.com when he signed with ASU.
