Celebrating Madison

Jonesboro (KAIT)-- One Region 8 girl celebrated her fifth birthday today, after months of fighting Leukemia.

Madison Russell was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on April 9th.

"It's every parent's worst nightmare,"  Sherry Russell says, "I just collapsed."

Working at St. Bernard's, Russell knew what was in store when doctors informed her of Madison's diagnosis.  Since that time, the Russell family has traveled weekly to Little Rock to take Madison to the Children's Hospital. With only one parent working, and three other children to take care of, the family's finances have been strained.  Russell, however, says their kids are their number one priority.

That was apparent today as the family celebrated Madison's birthday. The entire home was decorated with Madison's favorite super star--Hannah Montana.  After opening presents, blowing out her candles, and a family balloon fight, Madison wore herself out.

Russell says that her daughter has been looking forward to this day for a long time.  She adds that this is the happiest she has seen Madison in a while.

There will be a benefit concert for Madison tomorrow at the Trumann Dance at 12:30 pm.  All proceeds will go to Madison.
