BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Five bank accounts for Benton County hold $1.4 million that was collected from taxpayers last year and the year before, but never distributed to the cities, school districts and other entities that should have received it, county Tax Collector Gloria Peterson says.
The money from property taxes should have been distributed within a month of when it entered county coffers, under state law. Peterson has proposed to the county judge - the county's top elected administrator, not a judge in a law court - a plan to distribute the money.
Benton County Attorney George Spence said Peterson's plan calls for the largest amount, $412,526.16, to go to the Bentonville School District, while the Pleasure Heights Volunteer Fire Department would get $6.01. --- Information from: Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, http://www.arkansasonline.com
