ASU’s Leonard placed on Manning Award watch list

JONESBORO (8/17/09) - Arkansas State senior quarterback Corey Leonard is one of the 38 players across the nation that have been named to the 2009 Manning Award Watch List, released Monday by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Leonard, the Sun Belt Conference Preseason Co-Offensive Player of the Year, is one of three quarterbacks from the conference on the list that includes Heisman Trophy winners Tim Tebow of Florida and Sam Bradford of Oklahoma.

Leonard enters his senior season with a chance to conclude his career at Arkansas State as the school's all-time passing yardage, total offense, passing touchdowns and completions leader.  He is currently ranked second in all four statistical categories with 5,903 passing yards, 40 passing touchdowns, 7,297 yards of total offense and 457 completions.

Leonard has been the team total offense leader the past three seasons and last year he broke his own record with 2,863 yards. He also tied his school record with 16 touchdown passes  in 2008 and had a career best 2,347 passing yards, which placed him second in single-season yardage behind Lemon, who had 2,721 in 1998.

The winner of the Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, will be announced after the bowls in January and will be honored at a February banquet in New Orleans.  It is the only quarterback award that takes into consideration the candidates' bowl performances
