Red Wolves back on field for two practices

JONESBORO (8/17/09) - The Arkansas State football team conducted 11 straight practices before taking Sunday off to just hold meetings, but was back on the field Monday for its third set of two-a-day practices.  The two workouts marked the halfway point of its fall camp, which will conclude Saturday, Aug. 29 with its annual Fan Appreciation Day.

ASU will hold 25 practices during its fall camp, leading up to its first set of game-week practices for its Sept. 5 season opener against Mississippi Valley State.  The Red Wolves will have one more day of two-a-days, scheduled for Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. and 5:45 p.m.

"We've put them in a lot of situations during fall camp and we are getting better every day," said ASU head coach Steve Roberts.  "That is the key thing you are looking for, and I think we are getting improvement out of every position on the field."

The Red Wolves spent their entire workout Monday morning on the practice fields in shorts and helmets.  The first half of its evening workout in shorts and shoulder pads was spent on the practice fields as well, but the remainder was held inside ASU Stadium.

The morning practice finished with a team segment, while the second finished with back-to-back team segments that partly focused on red zone situations.

"Today was a tough day by design," said Roberts.  "We wanted to make them force through mentally and physically.  We put them in some tough situations with a little conditioning prior to our team session.  In the red zone, you've got to be as mentally tough as any place on the field and you've got to take everything up a notch in order to win football games...we put them through a little conditioning before that and they responded fairly well, but we have to get better."

Also coming out of ASU's camp Monday, senior quarterback Corey Leonard was named to the 2009 Manning Award Watch List.  Leonard, the Sun Belt Conference Preseason Co-Offensive Player of the Year, is also a nominee for the Johnny Unitas Award and has been tabbed preseason All-Sun Belt Conference by several preseason publications.

ASU will hold one practice at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
