JONESBORO (8/18/09) - The Arkansas State football team ended its 14th practice Tuesday inside ASU Stadium with a full-contact team segment focusing on red zone situations.
ASU got some practice time in rainy conditions as showers began to fall midway through the workout, which began at 5:45 p.m. and featured four team periods, a number of individual and group drills and special teams work as the Red Wolves continued their fall camp.
The live team segment featured five series that all started inside the red zone. The offense scored one touchdown and four field goals, but the defense won the competition by not allowing a first down on four of the five series. The Red Wolves lone touchdown came on a 13-yard pass from senior quarterback Corey Leonard to senior wide receiver Taylor Clements.
The defense allowed just three plays of over five yards, including the touchdown pass. Senior kicker Josh Arauco was successful on field goals from 33 and 26 yards out, while redshirt freshman Brandon Parker was good from 26 yards and sophomore Ryan Wilbourn hit a 32 yarder.
ASU head coach Steve Roberts said that practice improved as it progressed, noting the strong play of the defense during the competition segment.
"We picked it up and I thought the defense did a great job of flying around and making plays," said Roberts. "Offensively we made one great play, didn't make any negative plays and took care of the football, so both sides accomplished something in that particular drill."
ASU will hold its final set of two-a-day practices today, taking the field at 9:00 a.m. and 5:45 p.m.
