JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Most children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or just getting around, these children are at risk for cuts, infections, parasites, and disease.
But one company is trying to take the right steps in making a difference. Since 2006, TOMS shoes has donated more than 140,000 pairs of shoes. Here's how it works: Everytime you buy a pair of TOMS shoes, a pair of shoes is donated to a child in need.
That's where Madison Fowler comes in. Preparing for her senior year at Jonesboro High School, she says she thumbed through tons of magazines.
"I came across an ad for TOMS shoes and thought, 'oh those are pretty cute'. So I found out that they sell them at Gearhead Outfitters. But when I bought them, the salesman told me that I was actually purchasing 2 pairs of shoes for $44."
Madison bought another pair, and then another, and she says she doesn't want to stop there.
"I knew I needed to do more. I mean, we pick out our shoes with our outfits everyday, and I think it's a reality check when we learn that there are children out there that don't have shoes."
This Saturday, Madison is hosting a "Style Your Sole" event at her high school.
"You buy a pair of TOMS shoes and then just come out and decorate and personalize them. It's going to be a lot of fun and we have all the supplies you'll need. You know it feels really great to know that by doing this, I am giving back to people... that by actually purchasing a pair of shoes, I am doing something beneficial to someone else, not just myself."
Something she hopes Region 8 will catch on to.
