MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A man and a nine-year-old boy are dead after a car plowed into six people and a van on the Interstate 40 bridge on the Mississippi River on Friday.

Newspaper reports that four other people were injured, two of them critically. Their identities were not immediately released, but they were traveling in a van with Oklahoma license plates.

City officials say the van had stopped on the Hernando DeSoto Bridge over the Mississippi River with apparent mechanical trouble. The car hit some of the passengers as they stood on the bridge near the Front Street exit. Others were still in the van.

The boy was knocked over the rail of the bridge partially into the Mississippi. The body was recovered by a bystander. Officials say the driver of the car was not injured.
