Government now giving cash for appliances

JONESBORO, AR  (KAIT) -  Now that the clunkers are gone, the Obama Administration is now focusing on your old appliances.

There is now a new incentive program, aiming to persuade people to replace their old appliances with more energy-efficient ones.  This program will cover everything from refrigerators to dishwashers, to furnaces and air conditioners.

$300 million has been set aside and anyone wanting to take part could receive anywhere from $50 to $200 dollars toward their purchase of a new appliance.

The Department of Energy is hoping this program will encourage conservation, and the appliance industry is hoping it will provide a much-needed sales boost.

Details for this program are still being worked out, but it is set to begin sometime in the fall.  State governments have until October 15th to send detailed plans to Washington.
