MEMPHIS, Tenn. (8/28/09) - The Arkansas State volleyball team (0-1) battled Southeast Missouri State (1-0) to the wire before falling 3-1 in the season opener for both teams at the Memphis Invitational Friday afternoon at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
SEMO edged Arkansas State 25-21 in the first set, before going up 2-0 in the match with a 25-17 victory over the Red Wolves in set two. ASU fought back to grab a 25-23 victory in the third set, but the Redhawks outlasted A-State for a 27-25 victory in set four to claim the match.
Arkansas State sophomore middle blocker Cayla Fielder posted a career-high 10 blocks in the match, while redshirt freshman Brittany Hoag led the defensive effort with 23 digs and junior setter Laura Bennett tallied 42 assists and a career-high five blocks.
Arkansas State held a 23-22 advantage in the first set before SEMO closed out the set with three consecutive points. In set two, SEMO jumped out to an early 8-4 advantage, and Arkansas State never got within two the rest of the way as the Redhawks pulled away for a 25-17 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In set three, Arkansas State went on a 9-1 run midway through the set getting three kills during the run from freshman Kelsie Hodges to go up 20-11. SEMO rallied to cut the Red Wolves' lead to 24-23 late in the game, before A-State put the set away at 25-23 on a kill from Hoag.
After trailing 14-10 in the fourth set, Arkansas State rallied to take a 21-20 lead on a kill from Hoag, but the Redhawks outscored ASU 7-4 down the stretch to put the match away with a 27-25 victory in the set.
The Red Wolves will be back in action Saturday when they take on Evansville at 10:00 a.m. and tournament-host Memphis at 7:00 p.m.
