Redhawks muzzle Bulldogs 10-0

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Seven different Redhawks scored tonight in the 10-0 victory over the Bulldogs. Vanessa Hart, Taylor Thomas, and Bobbi Jo Schlick all led the way for Southeast as they each scored two goals in the match. The Redhawks now improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs remain winless at 0-3 for the year.

The first half was relatively mild offensively for Southeast as they only scored two of their ten goals in this period. Freshman Bobbi Jo Schlick started things off for the Redhawks in the 23rd minute after receiving a cross from freshman Courtney Luehmann and blasting it past goalkeeper Brittany Christian to give SEMO the 1-0 lead. Then, with only 28 seconds remaining in the half, junior Vanessa Hart scored the then team season-high second goal off a corner kick from freshman Kelly Goehring.

Although Southeast only scored two goals in the first half, they had 10 other shots as well to keep Christian on her toes. She recorded three saves for the game. Meanwhile in the other goal, keeper Kristen Starkey made her first start of the season tonight, but didn't have to make any saves as all five shots from Alabama A&M were off target.

Hart picked up right where she left off in the first half after scoring her second goal only two minutes into the second half from Schlick's assist. Following that goal, Schlick picked up her second goal and fifth point of the game as she drilled the ball into the bottom left corner of the net from an assist from freshman Hayley Abbott.

Previous team-leading scorer Ashley Runion didn't score tonight but assisted Kelly Goehring to give Southeast the 5-0 lead in the 56th minute of competition.

The Bulldogs had a total of 14 fouls tonight, which ended up haunting them in the 58th minute as Abbott scored off a free kick just outside the penalty box. Shortly after, senior Lauren Lacopo got in the middle of a group of players and smashed in the loose ball from Meg Herndon for her first goal of the season.

Freshman defender Taylor Thomas then went on a scoring spree starting in the 72nd minute as she scored two goals in only 2:30 of game time, both of which were breakaway goals as she got past all the Bulldog defenders. The assists came from Hart and sophomore Katie Snelson.

The tenth and final goal of the game came in the 82nd minute as Mabel Velarde scored her first career goal at Southeast from a Snelson assist.

The final shot count came to 24-5 in favor of Southeast. The Bulldogs had several scoring opportunities from corner kicks, but they couldn't capitalize to prevent the shutout. Brittany Christian gave up a total of six goals and made three saves, while Whitney Jackson notched one save while allowing four goals to go by.

The Redhawks close out their season-opening homestand on Sunday when they take on the Northern Illinois Huskies. Start time is set for 2 p.m.
