ASU football holds Fan Appreciation Day

JONESBORO (8/29/09) - The Arkansas State football team held its annual Fan Appreciation Day Saturday morning at ASU Stadium, wearing game day jerseys and working out in shorts and shoulder pads while fans watched the Red Wolves use their final practice this week to simulate game situations.

Following the practice, the Red Wolves joined the fans in singing the ASU fight song before signing autographs and visiting with those in attendance.  Fans were also able to pick up ASU football posters and schedules, received Fan Appreciation Day rosters and enjoyed free hot dogs, courtesy of Kroger, and Pepsi product.

"We have the best fans in the Sun Belt Conference and that can be seen by the support they show on game days and throughout the year," said ASU head coach Steve Roberts.  "That support is a tremendous boost for our team and obviously has a big impact on our games."

The Red Wolves divided the practice into two different sessions, working on drills, holding team periods and covering a variety of other practice material prior to the simulated segment.

"I think practice went real well today," said Roberts.  "We were able to get a lot of situations worked against our scout teams and gave ourselves some good looks during the first hour of practice.  We then went to a game script and got a lot accomplished, from sideline organization to how we handle timeouts, substitutions, injuries and other little things that sometimes go unnoticed until they go wrong."

"Now they need rest," continued Roberts.  "Their bodies are broken down,  and we will give them Sunday and Monday off.  We will have meetings and work on the game plans and that type of mental stuff.  Other than that, rest is the whole key so we can bounce back and be fresh when Saturday comes."

ASU's next practice is scheduled for Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.  The Red Wolves open their 2009 season Sept. 5 with a 6:00 p.m. home game against Mississippi Valley State.
