LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - According to a published report, Arkansas State Treasurer Martha Shoffner has paid more than $850 in state funds for birthday cards for lawmakers and constitutional officers.
Shoffner told The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette she thought it was a tradition for office to do so and that she plans to stop the practice.
A former state lawmaker, Shoffner has been treasurer since January 1997 and plans to seek re-election next year to a four-year term. Shoffner is not the only elected official to note various birthdays. Gov. Mike Beebe's spokesman Matt DeCample says the governor's office sends out roughly 1,000 "birthday greetings" a year on the governor's regular stationery.
A spokesman for former Gov. Mike Huckabee says Huckabee sent personal notes for birthdays at private expense. --- Information from: Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, http://www.arkansasonline.com
