ASU held reception for student-athletes Monday night
JONESBORO, Ark. (8/31/09) - The ASU Convocation Center was the scene Monday night for a "Welcome Back" reception for the Red Wolves student-athletes. Athletes from all 16 of ASU's teams were present at the event, sponsored by the ASU Athletic Department.
"We are extremely excited to have all of our students-athletes back on campus and look forward to having a great year both on and off the field," said Julie Lessiter ASU's Associate AD for Student Services.
The students had dinner and listened to remarks from Chancellor Dr. Robert Potts, Director of Athletics Dr. Dean Lee, and special guest speaker Jerry Muckensturm.
Muckensturm is the all-time tackles leader in the history of the ASU football program with 493 and was named defensive player of the year in the Southland Conference in 1975. A member of the undefeated 1975 football team, Muckensturm was drafted in the seventh round of the 1975 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears. He went on to play eight years in the pros leading the Bears in tackling in the 1979 and 1980 seasons. Muckensturm was inducted into the Arkansas State Hall of Honor in 1992.
Athletic competition continues this week for the Red Wolves soccer and volleyball teams, and begins for the football and cross country teams. The soccer team hosts UAPB at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, and begins play for the Red Wolf Cup against Mississippi Valley State at 5 p.m. on Friday and plays Grambling on Sunday at 2 p.m. The football team opens the season on Saturday at ASU Stadium at 6 p.m. against Mississippi Valley State, while the cross country team travels to Memphis later that night to take part in the Memphis Twilight. The volleyball team opens up the ASU Classic against UAPB Friday at 4 p.m. and plays Houston Baptist at noon on Saturday.
