LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Legislation to establish a special committee to determine what constitutes an adequate education in Arkansas is headed to the full Senate.
The Senate Education Committee endorsed the measure, which is considered a critical part of overhauling the state's public school system under a court order. The committee approved an amendment that would extend the special panel's July 1 deadline for making recommendations the Legislature by up to sixty days.
The state Supreme Court declared Arkansas' school funding formula unconstitutional last November. The high court gave the state until next January 1 to develop a plan that provides equal educational opportunities for school children statewide.
