Missouri mule most popular among state symbols

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Visitors to the Missouri State Fair voted the "Missouri mule" as their favorite state symbol.

Secretary of State Robin Carnahan says 736 people cast ballots in the mock election conducted at the fair last month.

The Missouri mule - which is the official state animal - led the way with 149 votes, or 20% of the ballots cast. Finishing second with 13% of the vote was the flowering dogwood, the official state tree.

Missouri's official state bird - the bluebird - was third with 11% of the vote.
