LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Democrats say they're preparing for a primary to select a nominee for a vacant state Senate seat.
Arkansas Democratic Party Chairman Todd Turner told Gov. Mike Beebe in a letter dated Thursday that the party will begin preparing for a primary for the Senate seat vacated by Sharon Trusty of Russellville. Trusty announced last month she was leaving the Senate for family reasons.
Arkansas Republican Party Chairman Doyle Webb on Wednesday asked Beebe to schedule a primary election for filling former state Sen. Sharon Trusty's seat. Turner said the Democratic Party had called a meeting of its executive committee to vote on whether to hold a primary, but said that state law requires both parties to have a primary when the other requests one.
