JONESBORO, AR - Arkansas State sophomore middle blocker Cayla Fielder pounded out 12 kills and added four blocks to lead the Red Wolves to a 3-0 victory over the Huskies of Houston Baptist Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the ASU Classic.
Arkansas State defeated the Huskies 25-19, 25-23 and 26-24 to win the tournament, going 3-0 record over the weekend. Houston Baptist finished the weekend at 2-1 to finish as tournament runners-up. The Red Wolves improved to 5-1 on the year with the victory over HBU (3-5).
Fielder won tournament MVP honors after hitting a team-high .550 to notch 23 kills and six blocks over the three-game tournament.
ASU freshman Brittany Hoag also earned all-tournament honors after leading the team with 26 kills on the weekend, and senior libero Heather Bowman earned all-tournament honors as well after leading the Red Wolves with 61 digs.
Hoag delivered eight kills in Saturday's match against Houston Baptist with the Red Wolves getting an additional seven kills from sophomore Charlyn Ursell.
After giving up the first point of the match to the Huskies, Arkansas State reeled off nine consecutive points, and Houston Baptist did not get closer than five the rest of the way as ASU opened the match with the 25-19 victory.
In set two, a kill from Hoag snapped a 21-21 tie, and ASU went on to take the set 25-23. In the final set, the Huskies held off four match points to erase a 24-20 ASU advantage, but a kill from Ursell put the Red Wolves on top 25-24 and a Huskie error on the final point wrapped up the match for Arkansas State.
Arkansas State will now play 10 consecutive matches away from the ASU Convocation Center, beginning with Tuesday's 7:00 p.m. contest at Tennessee-Martin.
"We're trying to prepare ourselves to hit the road," said ASU head coach Justin Ingram. "There are a lot of challenges with being away, so we just need to take it one match at a time and focus on the next opponent."
