ASU Women's Golf opens fall season at Chris Banister Classic

CALHOUN COUNTY, Ala. (9/6/09) - The Arkansas State women's golf team opened its fall schedule Sunday at the Chris Banister Gamecock Classic, shooting an opening-round 318 to finish the tournament's first day of play in fifth place out of eight teams.

ASU trails fourth-place Louisiana-Monroe by 12 strokes, while host Jacksonville State is in first place after posting a 299.  Lamar is in second place with a 303 and Indiana State finished the first day in third place with a 305.

The Red Wolves have four players ranked among the top 24 individuals, including sophomore Jennifer Welch in a tie for 11th place.  Welch shot a team-best 76 to lead the Red Wolves and is followed by senior Cassie Huffer in a tie for 20th place with an 80.  Senior Adrian Sportsman and freshman Anna Carling are tied for 24th place after both posted an 81.

The three-day tournament continues Monday with the second round at the par-72, 5,943-yard Silver Lakes on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
