MARION, Ark. -- A Marion police officer remains in serious condition after he was shot during a gunfire exchange in a police chase Wednesday that left one man dead.

Officer Freddy Williams is hospitalized at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee.

Twenty-two-year-old John Earl Walker is held in the Crittenden County Jail on a $1 million bond in connection to the incident.

Prosecutor Fred Thorne said Thursday he expected to formally charge Walker next week with manslaughter, theft of property, possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, and attempted capital murder.

Authorities say the officer stopped a stolen car driven by Walker. The vehicle had been car-jacked in Memphis last week. As the officer put Walker in the back of his patrol car, a passenger in the stolen vehicle slid into the driver's seat and drove off.

A shootout ensued and the driver was killed. Authorities are not releasing the man's name pending notification of his family. Police say Williams was shot in the face.
