WEINER, AR (KAIT) - Police were called to investigate a shooting on Kingshighway in Weiner just before 2:00 p.m. Monday afternoon.  What they found when they arrived has left a town shocked and saddened.

"We've had a major loss today for this young male," said Weiner Police Chief Rolland Geror.

Weiner Police Chief Rolland Geror said a 15-year-old Weiner boy is dead after police say he was involved in an accidental shooting.  Police found the young man's body inside a burgundy vehicle Monday afternoon.  Few details are being released about the death at this time.

Sergeant John Carter with the Arkansas State Police said they are conducting a "death investigation" into the shooting.

For the small community, this death is hitting many people very hard.

"It's a close knit community.  It's really tight.  These people are all together," said Geror.

The Weiner Police Department and Poinsett County Sheriff's Department are assisting in the investigation, but it has been turned over to the Arkansas State Police.

The 15-year-old's body will be sent to the state crime lab in Little Rock for an autopsy.  Sgt. Carter said that is an important step to try to determine what happened.

"He attends Weiner High School here.  I know it's going to be a sad day tomorrow for the school," said Geror.

Around 7:00 p.m. Monday night a memorial was held at the Weiner United Methodist Church where classmates of the 15-year-old boy gathered to remember him.

The following is the statement released Monday night by the Weiner Police Department:

"A 15-year-old Weiner High School student was killed today in an apparent accidental shooting.  The Weiner Police Department, Poinsett County Sheriff's Department, Arkansas State Police, and Weiner Fire and Rescue responded to the incident.  Investigators with the Arkansas State Police were asked to assist with the investigation.  It appears to have been a tragic accident involving a firearm."
