JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Region 8 News has confirmed that a local soldier was killed fighting in Afghanistan.

1st Lieutenant Tyler Parten was killed in action Thursday while fighting in the Konar province in Afghanistan.

According to the Department of Defense Parten was killed when insurgents attacked his unit using rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire.

Parten had been stationed in Afghanistan since May of this year with the Fourth Infantry Division out of Fort Carson, Colorado. This was his first tour of duty.

Parten was a Lieutenant in the US Army, but was a Scout Platoon Leader in this mission.  Parten grew up in Marianna and graduated from Marianna Lee High School.

Tyler Parten's mom Lona Parten says her son was a West-Point graduate.  She said he loved the military and his country.  She said, "He's not just a US Soldier, he's a man that took care of his troops."

Parten went on to say, "Today is 9-11 and without these guys we may not have our freedoms."

The Parten family is very proud of Tyler and his accomplishments.  His body will be flown back to the US this weekend.  Funeral arrangements for the late Tyler Parten are pending.  We will pass that information along when we get it.
