UA chancellor backs Pelphrey in basketball turmoil

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The chancellor of the University of Arkansas says basketball coach John Pelphrey is "the man who's going to turn it around" after police investigated three players over an alleged rape.

In an interview Friday with The Associated Press, Chancellor David Gearhart gave unqualified support to Pelphrey. Gearhart also acknowledged that fans and alumni hold Razorback athletes "to a visible standard."

Gearhart says athletes "are in the spotlight and when you're in the spotlight ... it brings greater responsibility."

Prosecutors declined to charge the three basketball players named in a complaint over an Aug. 27 incident at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house. However, the players could face disciplinary action from either the athletic department or academic officials.
