MARION, Ark. -- Toyota officials seeking the best location for a $750 million truck plant told Arkansas last week that San Antonio was better than a site near Memphis, Tennesee.
Two sources said Monday that the other site is more attractive because of Texas' major truck market and its proximity to Mexico.
A source in Governor Huckabee's administration said today that even though a site near Marion, Arkansas, has better facilities for moving goods in and out of the plant -- Texas was better for Toyota at this time because the Japanese automaker wants to tap the Latin American market.
The San Antonio Express-News newspaper reported Saturday that sources had told it that Toyota officials evaluating possible sites had recommended San Antonio. Toyota has not commented on whether it has a truck plant in the works.
