LINCOLN, Neb. (9/15/09) - The Arkansas State women's golf team posted its best score of the Chip-N Club Invitational on Tuesday, shooting a final-round 306 at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course to finish the two-day tournament in 10th place with a combined 937.
Jennifer Welch was the Red Wolves top individual finisher for the second straight tournament, placing tied for 12th with a 223 (72-77-74). Cassie Huffer joined Welch among the top 25 individual golfers, finishing tied for 17th with a 226 (74-79-73). Both Welch and Huffer have now finished in the top 25 in each of ASU's first two tournament's of the 2009-10 season.
ASU began tournament play yesterday with a first-round 315 and then shot a 316 to finish the opening day tied for 10th place. However, ASU came back to cut nine strokes off its first-round total and 10 off its second-round score in the final round. The Red Wolves' 306 was their third best round out of six played this year.
Missouri won the tournament, made up of 14 teams, with an 878, while host-school Nebraska took second place with an 889 and Kansas third with an 895.
Welch moved up one place in the standings and Huffer nine to close out the two-day tournament. Welch's best round of 72 was her second best of the season and Huffer's final-round 73 was her lowest of the year.
The final ASU player to finish in the top 50 was Adrian Sportsman, placing tied for 43rd with a 235 (81-76-78). Jennifer Loiacano finished 73rd at 253 (88-84-81) and Courtney Blevins 80th at 268 (93-88-87).
ASU will next compete at the Missouri State University/Payne Stewart Memorial in Springfield, Mo. Sept. 21-22.
