Police recruit arrested for statutory rape

BARTLETT, TN (WMC-TV) - A police recruit wanted to become one of Memphis' finest, but instead he is now a Bartlett Police suspect after admitting he made an online match with a minor.

At the time, Jonathan Mannon was learning how to protect and serve at the Memphis Police Academy.

"It's unfortunate for us because he was to be a Memphis Finest," said Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin.

But it was Bartlett police who taught Mannon his toughest lesson.  They arrested the 20-year-old Memphis Police recruit Monday for having sex with a 15 year-old girl.

According to a police affadavit, he blocked a Bartlett resident's driveway with his car.  When an officer and a tow truck arrived, a neighbor told a Bartlett police officer the only person who should be at the home was a young teenager. Instead, they found Mannon with the minor in her backyard.

"Poor judgment, very poor judgment," Godwin said.

The victim told police she and Mannon met on a website called myyearbook.com.  During subsequent text messages Mannon asked the girl's age. She said for him to guess her age and his first reply was 18 years old.  The guessing continued until he got to got to the number 15. Even after that, the officer in training and the teen admit, they had sex.

"It's very unfortunate that he involved himself with that and I'm very disappointed because he went through all the process and got to where he was," Godwin said.

But Jonathan Mannon's days as an aspiring Memphis Police officer are over.

"We collected all our equipment and he's no longer employed by the city of Memphis," Godwin said.

And now the officer in training is on the wrong side of the law. Mannon is charged with statutory rape. Godwin said while he's disappointed he's glad the problem came to light now rather than later when Mammon was on the force.
