SEMO volleyball falls to Jacksonville St.

JACKSONVILLE, AL - The Redhawks volleyball team lost to Jacksonville State in straight sets 3-0 (26-28, 23-25, 21-25) in a Ohio Valley Conference road contest at Pete Mathews Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Redhawks to 4-7 on the year and 1-1 in OVC play.

The opening set was a back-and-forth affair that went into extra points. The Redhawks trailed early on and battled back to grab a two-point lead, 9-7. The Gamecocks (9-5, 2-0 OVC) used a 4-0 run to regain the lead and held onto it till match-point. Leading 24-22, the Redhawks scored three-straight points to grab the lead 25-24. The Gamecocks would record four of the final five points for the win.

The second set was also a close frame as the Redhawks had the advantage early but 4-0 run by the Gamecocks gave them a 14-11 lead. The Redhawks rallied back to grab a 23-22 lead but the Gamecocks closed out the set with three-straight points for the win.

In the third and deciding set the Redhawks jumped ahead 3-1 and held on to that lead until a 9-0 run by the Gamecocks put them in a six-point hole, 15-9. The closest the Redhawks could get was two points 22-20 but the Gamecocks put the match away with three-straight points to keep them undefeated in OVC play.

New Redhawks setter Kelly Benacka (Jacobs/Algonquin, Ill.) had her second-straight double-double with a match-high 24 assists and 14 digs.

Emily Hughes (St. Benedict/Memphis, Tenn.) led the Redhawks offense with nine kills and a .200 attack percentage. Karleigh DeLong (Santiago/Corona, Calif.) finished with eight kills and seven digs. Paige Dossey (Avon/Avon, Ind.) chipped in seven kills.

Once again Molly Davis (Burris/Muncie, Ind.) led the defense with a match-best 27 digs. Davis recorded her 31st straight double-digit dig match dating back to last season. It was the fifth-straight match she has recorded 20 or more digs.

Emily Maher (Marcus/Flower Mound, Texas.) led all players with four block assists.

The Gamecocks were led by Brittney Whitten who finished with a match-high 13 kills and led her team with 20 digs. Brooke Schumacher finished with 19 assists to lead her team. Lauren Harkins chipped in 18 digs.

The Redhawks recorded a hitting percentage of just .043 as they had just 30 kills while finishing with 24 attack errors. The Gamecocks were held to a .116 attack percentage.

The Redhawks conclude their three-match road trip on Tuesday, September 22 as they face Ut Martin at 7:00 p.m.
