Red Wolves lead MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial

SPRINGFIELD, MO - Sophomore Jennifer Welch sits atop the individual leaderboard after helping the Arkansas State women's golf team shoot a first-round 301 Monday at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial, which left the Red Wolves in first place among 15 teams at the conclusion of the tournament's opening day.

Second-round play was suspended after heavy rain and thunderstorms hit Rivercut Golf Course.  Most players had four to five holes remaining in their second rounds when play was halted.

Welch fired an even-par 72, her second lowest round of the season, to finish one stroke ahead of Central Arkansas' C.J. Bobbitt and Missouri State's Heather Smith.  Including Welch, four ASU players finished the first round among the top 15 individual leaders.

Cassie Huffer and Adrian Sportsman each shot a 76 to finish the first round tied for 10th place, while Anna Carling posted a 77 to end the day tied for 14th place.

Competing in their third tournament this year, the Red Wolves' 301 was their second lowest round of the season and tied their lowest for all of last season.  ASU ended the first round five strokes ahead of second-place Central Arkansas and seven strokes in front of host Missouri State, which is in third place.

The second round is scheduled to resume at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday and will immediately be followed by the third and final round.
