ASU falls to Troy in SBC opener

Jonesboro, AR (KAIT) - The ASU Red Wolves began their hunt for a Sun Belt championship Saturday facing a familiar foe.

Troy dashed their conference title and bowl hopes last year 35 - 9. Saturday, the Trojans won their third straight game over ASU 30 - 27.

Like in basketball, this matchup was a game of runs.

The Red Wolves jumped to a 10-0 lead thanks to a 27 yard Josh Arauco field goal and a Reggie Arnold touchdown run.

Then the Trojans scored 23 unanswered.

First, a 44 yard trifecta by Sam Glusman. Then quarterback Levi Brown tossed a 6 yard TD to Tebarius Gill to tie it at 10.

Glusman added another field goal with 4 minutes to go in the first half. They closed out the half in style with a 9 yard DuJuan Harris touchdown run with less than a minute to go.

Troy started the second half with another Glusman boot, then the Red Wolves fought back. Reggie Arnold had his second touchdown of the day to cut it to 23-17. Then the ASU defense forced a fumble.

On the first offensive play, Corey Leonard found Brandon Thompkins for a 58 yard touchdown to take a 24-23 lead to the fourth quarter.

Arauco drilled a 31 yard kick to give ASU a 4 point lead. But a special teams fumble gave Troy the ball with a short field.

Larry Blakeney's crew capitalized. Levi Brown hit Corneilus Williams for a 8 yard score to give the Trojans the lead for good.

The Red Wolves fall to 1-2, 0-1 in the Sun Belt. They'll travel to Big Ten country next Saturday to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Kickoff is set for 11:05 am, and the game will be televised on either ESPN2 or ESPN Classic.
