Lepanto celebrates Centennial

Lepanto, AR (KAIT)- The city of Lepanto is celebrating its 100th birthday.  To top it off, for the past 79 years, the small town has been hosting a main attraction called the Terrapin Derby which is the racing of turtles.

The celebration also included a parade down Main Street, which was led by Fire Fighters who are the benefactors of this event.

"It is also a homecoming that people come back home to visit with family and friends and have class reunions and it's just a real nice thing for everybody to come home to" says Lepanto Fire Chief David Simmons. "100 percent of the proceeds go to us and we use that to buy equipment and run our operations throughout the year" adds Simmons.

Organizers say as many as ten thousand people have come to visit the town for the celebrations.
