BRADENTON, Fla. (10/6/09) - The Arkansas State women's golf team finished the Waterlefe Invitational in sixth place among 17 teams with a combined 922 after posting its lowest-single round score of the two-day tournament on Tuesday with a 300.
ASU's 300 was not only its best of the tournament, but its second lowest single-round score of the season. The Red Wolves dropped from tied for third after the first round to tied for seventh through 36 holes, but climbed back up to sixth place with a strong showing Tuesday. ASU turned in a first-round 303 and followed with a 319 for the second round.
"I am very pleased with our performance at Waterlefe," said ASU Head Coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "Jenn (Loiacano), Anna (Carling), Adrian (Sportsman) and Cassie (Huffer) all had personal single-round low scores during the tournament. We just couldn't get that second round together and it hurt us. We learned something from that and with three solid rounds, we are in contention. I feel like we are poised for a strong showing at our home event at Jonesboro Country Club next week."
The Red Wolves finished just three strokes behind fifth-place Daytona State and defeated Sun Belt opponents Troy, Florida Atlantic and South Alabama. Nova Southern claimed the championship with an 877, while Campbell finished second (883), host-school South Florida third (893) and Stetson fourth (902).
Following ASU were Troy (926), McNeese State (927), Florida Atlantic (935), Florida Gulf Coast (936), South Alabama (943), Southern Miss (943), Charleston Southern (943), Montana (946), South Florida B (972), UAB (976) and Eckerd College (1021).
Four of ASU's five competing golfers turned in their best score during the final round, including Cassie Huffer with a team-low 73, Anna Carling with a 74, Jennifer Loiacano with a 75 and Jennifer Welch with a 78. Huffer's 73 matched her lowest score of the season and Carling's 74 was her best of the year.
Adrian Sportsman finished tied for 20th place with a combined 228 to lead the Red Wolves. She carded a 75 for the opening 18 holes, 74 for the second 18 and a 79 for the final round. Joining Sportsman among the top 25 individual finishers was Huffer, who tied for 22nd place with a combined 230.
Sportsman picked up her third top-25 finish of the season, while Huffer has now placed among the top 25 finishers in all four tournament's played this year. Carling recorded a total 231 to finish tied for 28th place, Loiacano a 234 to end tied for 38th and Welch a 241 that placed her 60th.
ASU returns to action Oct. 12-13 when it hosts the Lady Red Wolf Classic at the Jonesboro Country Club.
