ON THE IOWA GAME
Giving you a look back at the Iowa game, and all our previous games, we are very proud of the way we played. I am very pleased with the improvement that our football team continues to show. We had some individuals that had outstanding performances last week.
ON ASU'S DEFENSIVE PLAYERS vs. IOWA
Bryan Hall, I thought, had his best game of the year. Alex Carrington continues to play very well. Javon Mckinnon, a linebacker, was very active for us. Javon plays a position that when we play a team that uses a lot of those four and five wide receiver offenses, his position comes out of the game to insert the nickel. He hasn't had much opportunity to be productive. He made the most of that opportunity last week. Daylan Walker had a really good game and I was very proud of him.
ON ASU'S OFFENSIVE PLAYERS vs. IOWA
Offensively, I thought Corey played his best game of the year. He threw the ball accurately. He was able to keep some things alive with his feet. He threw the football well under pressure. I'm very pleased with the way he played with two wide receivers other than Brandon Thompkins. I think everybody knows he played very well. As we bring along Taylor Stockemer and Allen Muse, I am very excited in what they will give to our football team this year and in the future.
ON TOM CASTILAW'S SEASON-ENDING INJURY AND THE OFFENSIVE LINE
We did lose Tom Castilaw for the season (in the Iowa game) which is another blow to our team, specifically the offensive line. We've lost two leaders on that line. I am very, very proud of the way that that group continues to improve. Derek Newton had his best ballgame going up against some of the best defensive linemen in the country.
ON ASU'S SPECIAL TEAMS vs. IOWA
I'm very proud of the way we played in our kicking game. I thought our cover units were great. We had two freshmen step up for us in the cover units. Chaz Scales and Tausean Holmes both made some great plays on our punt coverage. Our kickoffs and kickoff coverage was very good.
ON THE TEAM IN GENERAL
I'm excited about the level of improvement of our team. I'm excited about the progress that we've made and how we've continued to compete. Yes, we are 1-3, but we have lost to three teams with a combined 12-3 record. Two of them were top-20 programs and an outstanding Troy team who is playing very well right now as well. This is still nothing to hang our heads about. We just need to keep working and keep playing with the effort and the focus we have played with the last couple of weeks and good things are going to happen to our football team throughout this year.
ON THE ULM GAME
We know it's going to be a big-time challenge next Tuesday night at Louisiana-Monroe. We are playing a team that is playing very good football right now and has a lot of momentum after two big conference wins. They sit atop the league standings at 2-0. . It's going to be a tremendous challenge to try and get a victory this week against Louisiana-Monroe.
ON THE ULM OFFENSE
They are very balanced offensively. They average 208 and 210 yards respectively on the run and pass. They have a lot of weapons to get the ball to. They do a good job getting the ball to those guys out in space. They do a tremendous job in trying to formation you in shift and motion, whether it's the reset motion or the fly motion. Their quarterback Trey Revell is playing very well. He distributes the ball to a lot of playmakers. Goodin has obviously been having a great year as a running back. It's going to be a big-time challenge defensively to slow them down.
ON THE ULM DEFENSE
From an offensive perspective, looking at their defense, we really don't know what to expect. They are extremely multiple. They play a lot of man, press man, and soft man coverage. I think all 11 players on the field have lined up in different places versus the same formations through the year. They take a lot of chances defensively. They create a lot of negative plays. They give up some big plays as well. We've got to try and eliminate as many of those negative plays when they take chances defensively as we possibly can and still create some big plays.
ON ULM RUNNING BACK FRANK GOODIN
Goodin is a very good guy out in space. He can make you miss. He has very good speed. He has tremendous vision. He is just a complete running back. They throw him the ball out of the backfield as well, so he'll get his hands on the ball a number of times.
ON THE ASU-ULM SERIES
It's been a great game. The teams always play each other well, whether we play here or down there. We have won down there before.
ON THE ULM DEFENSE AND SAFETY GREG JAMES
To do what they are doing, they have to have guys that can cover. I think that all of their guys are very active and they can all run. Greg James is a player who has made a lot of plays in the league the past couple of years. He's defiantly someone who you have to be aware of where he is.
ON PLAYING ON NATIONAL TV
It's great for our team, fans, and university when we get our name out there, and to put Arkansas State University out to a national audience. It's obviously great and we have to play well to enhance that exposure.
ON ASU RUNNING BACK DON JONES
Don Jones is a player that can have a big-time positive impact on the success of our football team. He is a young player and is going to make mistakes. When you put him in the ballgame you understand that is a possibility. We have more confidence that he is going to make a big play than a negative play. Every day that we do anything, he is still learning to compete at this level.
