COPY-More deer killed during Mo. urban hunting period

Associated Press - October 15, 2009 5:14 AM ET

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Hunters in Missouri's urban areas killed almost twice as many deer this year as last fall.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says 1,242 deer were killed from last Friday through Monday during the urban portion of Missouri's firearms deer season.

That's up from 678 last year, but far shy of the record 2,077 deer killed during the 2004 urban hunt. The conservation commission approved the first urban deer hunt in 2003.

The department says this year's urban deer kill may have been larger than last year's because of the unseasonably warm weather last year. When weather is warmer, deer are less likely to move around, thus making them harder for hunters to spot.
